Bulldogs Beat League Leading Brooks 6-3

The Bulldogs headed to Brooks Friday night to play the league leading Bandits. Just for the record the Brooks Bandits who play in the AJHL (that stands for Alberta Junior Hockey League) only have 4 players from Alberta. Lowest by a long shot in the whole league. (Every other team was double digits). Brooks opened up the scoring at 7:51 with new comer David Patella scoring his first as a Bandit unassisted. Patella was recently acquired from the BCHL’s Merritt Centennials. The Bulldogs responded just over a minute later with 16 year old Otto Hanson scoring his 5th of the season making it a 1-1 game. David Brandes got a holding penalty half way through the first period. The Bulldogs successfully killed that off. The Bulldogs cleared the puck out and then Brandes came out of the box and scored a sweet wrap around goal. Heath Armstrong tied it up for the Bandits at 13:45. With 8 seconds remaining in the first period Arizona State commit Dominic Campione got a 4 minute kneeing penalty. Bulldogs scored 58 seconds into the second period. Kurt Gurkan who has been on fire lately scored his 5th of the season from David Brandes and Matthew Hennessey who added a second assist in as many games. That made the game 3-2. Then at 7:09 of the second period Tanner Willick playing in his first came after returning from injury made it 4-2 by picking up his own rebound and scoring. At 12:25 of the second period Otto Hanson got a cross checking penalty. His second penalty of the game. This isn’t good. Brooks has the best Power Play Percent by far in the league at 34%.😲😲 While on the Power Play Bandit Ethan Beyer was doing something with the puck, he wasn’t paying attention anyway maybe thinking of all the good looking women down at Arizona State? What ever it was it wasn’t hockey and he lost the puck and Brendan Ross skated down the ice (I’m assuming laughing the whole time) then scored a nice backhand goal (his 14th of the season) beating Ethan Barwick. While still on the Power Play Winnipeg native Sam Court must of taken lessons from Ethan Beyer. He goofed up with the puck while on the same Power Play and did the same thing. This time Kody Willick and Kurt Gurkan went down on a 2 on 1 and made the game 6-2. Not much happened in the third period. 18 year old Luke Bibby from Brantford, Ontario scored his first AJHL to make it 6-3 Brooks. Brooks dropped just their second game at home in regulation this season. Other Notes Bulldogs next game is Saturday January 21st against the Calgary Canucks in Calgary. Calgary just beat Camrose 5-2 Friday night. The Bulldogs and Canucks have only met once this season back in November in Blackfalds. The outcome was a 3-1 win for Calgary. Attendance was 1433. Quite a few started bailing early. Not real fans.🤪 In the North Division tonight Bonnyville beat top seeded north team Spruce Grove Saints 1-0 in a shootout. I know the standings don’t show it, but at least in my viewings Bonnyville looks like a way better team than Whitecourt. I am more shocked Whitecourt is even in second place. What if Connor Dick hit Hughie Hooker at centre ice or got into a fight. How would you explain that as a broadcaster?
