Bulldogs open up the 2023-24 season in Olds Friday night. Last year the camera work was by far the worst when Hockey TV did games in Olds. This year it looks a million times better. They either hired a new guy to do the camera or the guy quit drinking. Awesome job on the camera.๐
Grizzlys veteran Ryder Many Grey horses opened up the scoring for the Grizzlys at 12:48 of the first period. Assists on the goal to former Merritt Centennial Rocco LaCara and Greye Rampton making it 1-0 Grizzlys.
Connor Dick ties it up by roofing a shot at 5:17 from Jayden Joly. The Bulldogs outshot the Grizzlys 12-6 in the first period.
Just 19 seconds into the second period Edward Moskowitz skated down the left side of the ice and fired a laser from the top of the circles beating Grizzlys netminder Aidan Comeau to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Assists on the goal to veterans Layne Loomer and Carter Patterson.
Kyle Vennemen scored for Olds on the power play to make it a 2-2 game at 9:31 of the second period. Assists on the goal to Greye Rampton and former Bonnyville Pontiac Matteo Sjoberg. The Bulldogs regained the lead shortly while on a Power Play of their own when Saskatoon native Josh Knittig scored his first AJHL goal at 13:25 on a one time shot from a beautiful pass from David Brandes. The other assist on the goal to Connor Dick making it a 3-2 game Bulldogs.
Jayden Joly scored his first goal of the season at 18:14 of the second period on the power play. Assists on the goal to David Brandes and Luke Dahlen. The Bulldogs outshot the Grizzlys 17-10 in the second period.
Jayden Joly scored again at 9:05 of the third period to make it a 5-2 game. Assists on the goal to David Brandes and Connor Dick. Bulldogs largely outshooting the Grizzlys in the third period 18-4
Attendance in Olds was 956
David Brandes (3 assists) was named first star of the game which was well deserved as he was for sure the most notable player on the ice.
Bulldogs goaltender Ethan Morrow stopped 18 of 20 shots for the win. Olds goaltender Aidan Comeau stopped 42 of 47 shots. Even with the third period being as lopsided in the shooting as it was. This Grizzlys team is a way better team than the one they iced last year.
Bulldogs next game is Saturday September 16th against the Drayton Valley Thunder at home. Drayton Valley played the Brooks Bandits last night and lost 2-1. After I looked at the box score I seen that Brooks outshot Drayton big time. Looks like the Thunder had a good performance by new goaltender from Ontario Chazz Nixon.
Sort of noticed a veteran and fan favorite defenceman of the Bulldogs is not on the roster or listed on the website or๐ค๐ค
On September 11th, 2023 the Bulldogs traded Ben Winkelmann to the Drayton Valley Thunder for F Cody Pisarcyk. Pisarcyk is currently listed as playing for the Maine Nordiques of the NAHL.
