Red Deer Rebels suffered a tough 4-3 loss to Vancouver Giants with ill-timed penalties costing them dearly. Despite outshooting their opponents, Rebels fell short, losing the game 4-3.

Tonight was the first and only meeting between Vancouver and Red Deer this season. The last time they met was on Oct. 28, 2022 in Red Deer, with the Rebels winning 4-0. Vancouver last hosted Red Deer nearly four years ago, when Vancouver won 4-1.

No scoring in the first period and the shots were 9-7 Red Deer.

Frantisek Formanek put the Rebels on the board at 13:47 of the second period with the assist going to Kai Uchacz.-Red Deer forward Frantisek Formanek snapped a scoreless tie 13:47 into the second period when Kai Uchacz circled through the high slot, skated down into the right circle and fed his linemate at the goal front. It was Formanek’s fourth goal of the season.

Tyler Thorpe responded while the Giants were on the Power Play 30 seconds later to tie the game up. The assists on the goal to Vitoria, BC native Ty Halaburda and 17 year old Colton Roberts.-However, a mere five seconds later Jhett Larson was assessed a boarding penalty that led to a Giants goal off the stick of Tyler Thorpe, who beat netminder Rhett Stoesser with a rising wrister from low in the right circle.

Ty Halaburda scored on a wrap around at 18:33 of the second period to give the Giants the 2-1 lead. With the assists on the goal to Lloydminster native Mazden Leslie and 2023 Calgary Flames 4th rounder Jaden Lipinski.

Colton Langkow then scored not even 30 seconds later at 18:58 to give the Giants a 3-1 lead. With the assists on the goal to Regina native 19 year old Kyren Gronick and Victoria native Julian Cull.

Shots on goal in the second period were 14-11 for the Giants.

Samuel Drancak batted one in at 1:05 of the third period to make it a 3-2 game with the assists to Talon Brigley and Carson Birnie.Red Deer pulled to within one early in the third period when Samuel Drancak notched his fourth of the season off a setup by Talon Brigley.

Calgary Flames Draft pick and Scottsdale, Arizona native Jaden Lipinski scored right off the draw on the Power Play at 7:25 of the third period making it a 4-2 game. Lipinski just plowed in right off the draw and scored a goal and nobody did a single thing about it. I mean it doesn’t hurt that Lipinski is 6’4 205. But yeah thats not usually a good thing to have happen.

Talon Brigley scored from Ollie Josephson to make it a 4-3 game at 10:01 of the third period.Brigley pulled the Rebels closer at the midway point of the period, getting his stick on a fine feed from Ollie Josephson and tipping the puck past netminder Brett Mirwald. The goal, on the power play, was Brigley’s fourth this fall.

Shots on goal in the third period were 15-8 for the Rebels. The Rebels outshot the Giants 35-29 in the game.

Saskatoon native and former Waywayseecapo Wolverine Brett Mirwald made 32 saves on the 35 shots that he faced for the win. While Rhett Stoesser stopped 25 of the 29 shots that he faced.

Rebels next game is Friday November 10th in Prince George against the Cougars.

Four Giants have been named to NHL Central Scouting’s ‘Preliminary Players to Watch’ List for the 2024 NHL Draft, released on Wednesday. Cracking the list were defenceman Colton Roberts (‘B’), defenceman Marek Howell (‘C’), forward Adam Tiltbach (‘C’) and forward Tyler Thorpe (‘W’).

The Giants have also been with out 2023 Flames First Rounder Samuel Honzek due to injury.
