In a game where five out of the six starters were from the Sherwood Park Crusaders, Canada West faced Sweden, and early on, goaltender Erik Roest received a puzzling interference penalty. During a power play, Sweden’s Alex Zetterberg scored an unassisted slap shot to make it 1-0. Anton Frondell extended Sweden’s lead to 2-0 with an assist from Viktor Eklund, but Brooks Bandit Logan Sawyer responded, making it 2-1 for Canada West. The first period ended with Sweden leading 3-1, as Zetterberg scored on the power play. In the third period, despite Canada West outshooting Sweden, a stupid penalty by Canada West and a late goal from Lucas Pettersson sealed a 4-2 win for Sweden. Carl Axelsson made 27 saves for Sweden, while Roest stopped 12 of 15 shots. Logan Sawyer stood out as the best player for Canada, earning Player of the Game, alongside Victor Eklund for Sweden.
The guy doing the game for Canada West pregame and intermissions is the guy who does the Bonnyville Pontiacs games (I think, usually don’t see him in a suit*). That guy has one of the best announcer voices.
5 of the 6 starters of the game were Sherwood Park Crusaders
Canada West goaltender Erik Roest got a strange penalty which I still don’t quite understand for Interference a minute in a half into the game. While on the Power Play Alex Zetterberg scored top corner on a slap shot to make it 1-0 Sweden unassisted.
Anton Frondell made it 2-0 Sweden at 4:06 of the first period with the assist going to Viktor Eklund.
Brooks Bandit Logan Sawyer makes it 2-1 when he scores for Canada West at 9:43 of the opening period unassisted.
Sweden outshot Canada West in the first period 9-7.
Canada West outshot Sweden 8-3 in the second period
Then with 3:52 remaining Mathieu Taillfier took the most undisciplined disrespectful to his teammates penalty I have ever seen. Right in front of the ref. Unneeded whack in the head that was pointless and probably felt like a fly landed on his head. To me that looked like an intent to throw the game. It really looked that brutal.
Alexander Zetterberg scored on the powerplay from Anton Frondell and Jack Berglund at 17:01 of the opening period to make it 3-1 Sweden.
Then 8 seconds later Brooks Bandit Nathan Free scores on an amazing wrap around to make it 3-2 unassisted (according to the score sheet but I am thinking Ryan Zaremba got one there) at 17:08 of the third period.
Then a Canada West D man lost the puck with the goalie pulled and Lucas Pettersson scored for Sweden to make it 4-2 with 1:04 remaining in the game.
Canada West outshot Sweden 12-6 in the third period and 29-16 in the game.
Carl Axelsson made 27 saves on the 29 shots that he faced for the win for Sweden. While Erik Roest stopped 12 of the 15 shots he faced for Canada West.
Players of the game I am guessing Sawyer for Canada and Zetterberg for Sweden. I was right on Canada but wrong on Sweden it was Victor Eklund. Logan Sawyer was hands down the best player on the ice. He stood out the most for sure.
