The USHL (United States Hockey League) is a Tier 1 junior ice hockey league in the United States. The league’s draft is divided into two phases. Phase 1 is for players under 17 years old, typically born in the year of the draft or the previous year, while Phase 2 is for players aged 16-20. In Phase 2, teams can draft players who were not selected in Phase 1, and they can also draft players who have become eligible since the Phase 1 draft due to their age or other reasons.
The players selected in Phase 2 are usually a mix of high school and midget players, who are considered to have potential for college or professional hockey. The success rate of these players making it to the NHL varies, but many have gone on to have successful college and professional careers.
The USHL draft was first introduced in 2002, and it has since become a crucial part of the league’s player development system. It provides teams with the opportunity to identify and select talented players who can contribute to their success in the future.
