One of the greatest comebacks I imagine in the history of the World Hockey Championships fell short when John Tavares scored just 15 seconds into overtime. On what was still a very embarassing game for Canada. Have to hand it to Austria they played awesome. Even with the loss in overtime Austria was all smiles, I never thought that team was capable of that looking at them on paper. When I think of Austria the only 2 players I can name off the top of my head is Marco Rossi and Tomas Vanek and that is it along with that kid Montreal drafted last year Reinbacher who i have no idea why he isn’t on the team (Maybe he didn’t make it).
If Canada doesn’t wake up they are going to get smoked when they play a real team.
Dylan Cozens opened up the scoring for Canada at 6:34 of the first period with the assists going to Andrew Mangiapane and Kaiden Guhle.
Kaiden Guhle scores to make it 2-0 Canada at 9:21 of the first period with the assists on the goal going to Captain John Tavares and Connor Bedard. You could see that goal coming a mile away when Guhle was gliding down the ice and Tavares passed it out.
The Austrians cut the lead to 2-1 moments later when Benjamin Nissner jumped on lose puck and scored at 10:11 of the first period. The assists on the goal went to Mario Huber and Captain Thomas Raffl. Raffl played for the Swift Current Broncos and the Kelowna Rockets in the 2005-06 season. He also came back to play with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose for 31 games in 2015.
Buffalo Sabres Bowen Byram makes it 3-0 for Canada firing it from the point its hard to tell if it hit Bunting or the Austrian guy in front. It hit something before going in but the goal was credited to Byram with the assist going to former Everett Silvertip and Kamloops Blazer Olen Zellweger.
Shots on goal in the first period were 13-6 for Canada
Jared McCann made it 4-1 at 2:57 of the second period with the assist going to Michael Bunting. McCann also represented Canada at the World Championships in 2019 in Slovakia winning Silver. He also represented them at the U18 and U17 levels.
Connor Bedard scored at 9:32 of the middle frame and its 5-1 for Canada making that his 5th goal of the tournament with the assist going to a pair of Albertans in Dylan Guenther and Colton Paryako.
Pierre-Luc Dubois scores on the Power Play to give Canada the 6-1 lead at 17:56 of the second period. The assists on the goal went to Brandon Hagel and Owen Power.
Shots on goal in the second period were 22-6 for the Canadians
Benjamin Baumgartner scores a nice goal on a 2 on 1 rush with Peter Schneider at 3:14 of the third period. This makes it a 6-2 game.
The Austrians got another one moments later when Peter Schneider went top shelf to finish a nice play set up by Dominic Zerger and Bernd Wolf. The score was 6-3 with 15 minutes still to play.
With just under 10 minutes left, Dominic Zwerger rushed the puck into the Canadian zone and unloaded a slap shot that beat Binnington on the blocker side to make it 6-4 at 10:41 of the second period. The assist on the goal went to Thimo Nickl. Nickl a 2020 fourth round draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks who is now signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins played a season of Junior in the QMJHL in 2019-20 with the Drummondville Voltigeurs. He also played last season with the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL where he got 2 goals and 21 points in 66 games.
Peter Schneider scores for Austria their 4th straight goal to move them within 1. Its 6-5 Austria at 15:56 of the third period. The assists on the goal went to Dominic Zwerger and Clemens Unterweger. I know that was a huge goal for the Austrians and it sucked for Canada but all I could think of was Unterweger. It is so off topic but I bet lots reading it too thought “I wonder if there is any relation? Does he have an Uncle Jack? I am sure he is a nice guy with no relations to Jack but I bet he has been asked. Never thought of that guy for almost 20 years until I seen that name again.
Marco Rossi ties the game after a Canadian turnover by Guhle who what the hell was he doing there. WOW! It is a 6-6 game. The goal was unassisted at 19:11.
Shots in the third period were 13-9 for Canada.
John Tavares finished the game just 15 seconds into overtime with the assists going to Andrew Mangiapane and Kaiden Guhle.
Shots on goal in overtime were 1-0 Canada with the Canadians outshooting the Austrians 49-21 in the game.
Jordan Binnington made 15 saves on the 21 shots that he faced for the win for Canada. For the Austrians David Madlener was amazing stopping 42 of the 49 shots that he faced.
Player of the game for Team Austria was Dominic Zwerger. The player of the game for Canada was Kaiden Guhle who played good, but that mess up at the end was bad. You make millions of dollars a year playing this game you shouldn’t be doing that.
Canadas next game is Thursday against Norway
“They looked bad, they all looked bad, the only one that looked any good was Bedard and that’s probably because he isn’t old enough to drink over there”
My Drunk Greek Neighbor Stavros
LOL It sucks that he is the odd man out I really wanted to see Greig play more. He is young there is always next year. I liked the guy before but this is one of the greatest goals ever scored in the history of the NHL. I think this is better than Orr’s cup winner. Guy probably got so much tail after that one.
