That was the worst I have ever seen the Rebels play in a long time. In a rematch within just over a week, the Edmonton Oil Kings triumphed over the Red Deer Rebels with a score of 5-1 on Sunday, repeating their previous outcome. Despite outshooting Edmonton during the Kids Day Matinee at the Peavey Mart Centrium, attended by 4,040 spectators, the Rebels managed to score only once against Edmonton’s goaltender Alex Worthington. The Rebels’ struggles with special teams were again a significant factor in their defeat.

Florida Panthers 2024 2nd round selection Gracyn Sawchyn gets the Oil Kings on the board on the Power Play at 15:55 of the first period with the assists on the goal going to Gavin Hodnett and Adam Jecho

Devon, Alberta native Jack Toogood scored his first 1st WHL goal at 17:10 of the first period to make it a 2-90 game. The assists on the goal went to Gracyn’s younger brother Lukas Sawchyn who played for the Chicago Steel of the USHL last season and former Portland Winterhawk Josh Mori. This goal was very confusing as even though they were even strength the Rebels were playing like they were shorthanded.

Shots in the first period were 10-9 for the Rebels

Gracyn Sawchyn made it a 3-0 game 42 seconds into the second period.  Sawchyn caught the Rebels flat-footed and tucked home his second of the game past Rebels netminder Rhett Stoesser. The assists on the goal went to Adam Jecho and Gavin Hodnett.

Roan Woodward scored his third goal of the season to make it a 4-0 Oil Kings game on the Power Play at 17:52 of the second period. The assist on the goal went to Lukas Sawchyn.

Shots in the second period were 15-10 for the Rebels.

Luke Vlooswyk snuck one past Alex Worthington at 4:51 of the third period with the assists going to Carson Birnie and Ollie Josephson. That gets the Rebels on the board and makes the game 4-1. I bet that goal will haunt Worthington. He had the easiest shutout going. He had all easy shots and this game would look good on a resume (especially if you didn’t watch it). I have watched Worthington play alot and he is a good goalie, just not really tested what so ever, on that goal he probably got complacent.

Samuel Drancak had a penalty shot attempt in the third which he missed.

Euro Import Miroslav Holinka scored his third goal of the season to make it a 5-1 game at 17:28 on the Power Play with the assists on the goal going to Ethan MacKenzie and Gracyn Sawchyn.

Shots in the third period were 18-9 for the Rebels with the Rebels outshooting the Oil Kings in the game 43-28

Waldheim, Saskatchewan native Alex Worthington made 41 saves on the 42 shots that he faced for the win for the Oil Kings. For the Rebels Rhett Stoesser made 15 saves on the 19 shots that he faced in the first 2 periods. Chase Wutzke went in for the third and made 8 saves on the 9 shots that he faced.

Three Stars of the game were 1) Gracyn Sawchyn 2) Alex Worthington 3) Lukas Sawchyn

Attendance in Red Deer was 4,040

Rebels next game is Friday October 25th in Red Deer against the Medicine Hat Tigers. Again.
