Canada defeated Finland 4-0 in their tournament opener on Boxing Day.
Gavin McKenna picked up his own rebound when left alone in front of the net for quite awhile made it 1-0 for the Canadians at 19:08 of the first period. The assist on the goal went to Erie Otters Matthew Schaefer and Philadelphia Flyers 2023 first rounder Oliver Bonk.
Shots on goal in the first period were 17-6 for the Canadians
Easton Cowan made it 2-0 for the Canadians when he picks up a Finnish give away at 5:22 of the second frame.
Shots on goal in the second period were 12-5 for the Canadians
Luca Pinelli made it 3-0 at 15:14 of the third period with the assists going to Caden Price and Mathieu Cataford.
After Finland had so many chances with a pulled goalie at the end Matthew Schaefer fired it down the ice into the empty net at 19:41 of the third period.
Shots on goal in the third period were 20-12 for Finland. Canada outshot the Finns in the game though 41-31.
Carter George stopped all 31 shots that he faced for the Shutout and the win for the Canadians. For the Finns Petteri Rimpinen made 37 saves on the 41 shots that he faced.
Player of the game for Finland was the goaltender Petteri Rimpinen. For Canada it was goalie Carter George. It appears that they won paddles that resemble those used in the 1993 hit Movie Dazed and Confused. I understand it is Canadian history and what not but I do not see much kid having any use for something that looks like a Kayak Paddle. Unless it is to bust heads in.
Canada’s next game is tomorrow December 27th Friday against Latvia.
As of now I think the Czechs may do better than Button picked.
