The Rebels have made some trades at the deadline. They’ve pulled off a pretty significant three-team trade with Swift Current and Moose Jaw.

Here’s the breakdown:

Red Deer gets:

  • Forward Ty Coupland (’07) from Swift Current
  • Defenseman Keaton Dowhaniuk (’04) from Moose Jaw
  • A 4th round pick in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft from Swift Current

Swift Current receives:

  • Defenseman Hunter Mayo (’04) from Red Deer
  • Forward Trae Wilke (’06) from Red Deer

Moose Jaw lands:

  • Defenseman Eric Johnston (’04) (originally from Red Deer, but went through Swift Current in this deal)
  • A 6th round pick in the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft from Red Deer
  • A 4th round pick in the 2027 WHL Prospects Draft from Red Deer

Some interesting details on the players involved:

Coupland, a second-round pick by Swift Current in 2022, is having a solid season with 21 points (9 goals, 12 assists) in 32 games. He also had a good rookie year with 31 points. Dowhaniuk brings a lot of experience to Red Deer, having played 246 regular season games with Prince George and Moose Jaw. He was a high draft pick himself, going third overall to Prince George back in 2019.

On the way out of Red Deer, Mayo, a second-round pick for the Rebels in 2019, has been a key player for them with 224 regular season games under his belt and a respectable 116 points (42 goals, 74 assists). He also contributed 13 points in 31 playoff games. Wilke, who joined the Rebels this season from Lethbridge, put up 19 points in 38 games.

Here’s a quick look at the two players heading to Red Deer:

  • Ty Coupland (Forward): Shoots Right, 5’10”, 167 lbs, Born May 6, 2007, from North Vancouver, BC
  • Keaton Dowhaniuk (Defense): Shoots Left, 6’0”, 163 lbs, Born February 8, 2004, from Sherwood Park, AB

This trade definitely shakes things up for all three teams. It will be interesting to see how these players perform in their new environments.
