In a historic upset at the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, Denmark stunned Canada with a 2-1 quarterfinal victory, marking the greatest shock in the tournament’s history. Trailing 1-0, the host nation rallied with two goals in the final three minutes from Nikolaj Ehlers and Nick Olesen, igniting the Jyske Bank Boxen crowd. Goalkeeper Frederik Dichow was pivotal, stopping 39 of 40 shots, including key saves against Nathan MacKinnon and Ryan O’Reilly. Despite Canada’s dominance, Denmark’s resilience, bolstered by two successful penalty kills, secured their first-ever semifinal berth and only their second competitive win over Canada, following a 2023 preliminary round victory. This Cinderella story, led by coach Mikael Gath, has Denmark poised to compete for a medal in Lego Land.
