Last night at the Eagle Builders Centre, the Blackfalds Bulldogs put on a clinic, dismantling the visiting Okotoks Oilers 7-1 in BCHL action on March 21, 2026. The Bulldogs wasted no time setting the tone, with Thomas Neu potting a power-play goal just 31 seconds in, followed quickly by Luke Dahlen and another from Neu to build an early edge—though Nate Porter got one back for Okotoks at 0:54 to briefly keep things interesting. From there, Blackfalds took over completely, piling on three more in the second (including Neu’s hat-trick completer) and two in the third from Nikita Ivashchenko and Liam Hoff, while blanking the Oilers the rest of the way. The Bulldogs’ attack was firing on all cylinders, led by Neu’s three-goal night, solid contributions from Joey Melo, and helpers from guys like Noah Mertz. It wasn’t all one-sided in terms of goaltending credit—the Oilers’ Slovakian netminder Patrik Kliment stood tall and played awesome between the pipes, keeping the score from ballooning even further. A lot of folks around the rink thought the shot counters were a little light on Okotoks’ side against him; without his efforts, this could’ve easily been a double-digit blowout. Okotoks is really battling through a rough patch right now, riddled with injuries and missing their two top scorers who bolted for the WHL (one of them even circling back to the BCHL with Sherwood Park instead). That kind of talent drain and health issues made it tough for them to generate much sustained pressure. With the win, the Bulldogs stay locked in a tight battle, tied with the Brooks Bandits for first place in the Interior East (or Alberta Division, depending on how you slice the standings). Blackfalds looks like they’re peaking at the right time, while Okotoks whose golf course bound, will have an excellent team next season pending on players coming back.

Thomas Neu makes it a 1-0 Bulldogs game when Joey Melo spotted him parked in front of the net at 12:36 of the first period. The other assist on the goal went to Noah Mertz. That is the fifth straight game that Neu has scored a goal in.

Nate Porter tied the game up for the Okotoks Oilers seconds later as the announcer was announcing the Bulldogs goal too to boot. The assists on the goal went to Dartmouth commit Marko Lisica and the Oilers leading scorer 20 year old Chicago, Illinois native Michael Kowalski at 13:23 of the first period.

Luke Dahlen restored the Bulldogs lead making it a 2-1 game at 15:56 of the first period with his 29th goal of the season, The assists on the goal went to Matthew Croxall and Joey Melo.

Thomas Neu scored his second goal of the game at 17:59 of the first period. The assists on the goal went to Noah Mertz and Dean Toskos.

Shots on goal in the first period were 13-12 for the Bulldogs.

Thomas Neu completed his hat trick with his 27th goal of the season at 2:19 of the second period making it a 4-1 game. The assists on the goal went to Noah Mertz and Dean Toskos,

Joey Melo makes it a 5-1 game for the Bulldogs at 6:07 of the second period. The assists on the goal went to Krisjanis Sarts and Luke Dahlen.

Shots on goal in the second period were 10-7 for the Bulldogs

Nikita Ivashchenko made it a 6-1 walking in and snipping his team leading 31st goal of the season at 1:34 of the third period with the assist on the goal going to Nikita Mescheryakov. That was one of the louder cheered goals scored all night, I think Ivashchenko had a bunch of family in the stands from back home. It was good to see him score after having a bunch of chances including ringing one of the post moments earlier.

Liam Hoff made it a 7-1 game at 8:44 of the third period. The assists on the goal went to Nikita Mescheryakov and Antoine Gauthier.

Shots on goal in the third period were 14-2 for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs outshot the Oilers 37-21 in the game.

Oliver Kiraly stopped 20 of the 21 shots that he faced for the win for the Bulldogs. He got a bit of help in the last 30 seconds of the game when Cooper Schmidt went in and said hi for a bit. For the Oilers Patrik Kliment stopped 30 of the 37 shots he face. I think he faced almost double that and they weren’t tracking them properly. That guy was busy all night long, he played really awesome, most goalies would of let in way more or gave up. He never did.

Three Stars of the game were 1) Thomas Neu 2) Joey Melo 3) Noah Mertz

Attendance in Blackfalds was 851
