The Swift Current Broncos are like the red headed step child of the Western Hockey League. It doesn’t hurt that so called nick name considering many great gingers that have played for that team in the past. But its not just that. The organization is one you really can’t hate or say anything bad about as its like kicking a guy when he is down. Just like that step child you kick it enough eventually it bites back. The Broncos downed the Rebels in a game which after the first period was boring as hell to watch. I seen a few people leave after this one guy left saying he had something better to do. I later seen him with a 6 pack of lucky by the Super Store parking lot.👍 Just like last night there were 2 periods of no scoring.
At 6:28 of the first period New Jersey Devil draft pick Josh Filmon scored his 45th goal of the season on the Power Play to give the Broncos the lead 1-0. Assists on the goal to Pittsburgh Penguins first rounder Owen Pickering and Connor Hvidston.
Hunter Mayo tied it up scoring his 17th goal of the season from the point on the Power play. Assists on the goal to Kai Uchacz and Mats Lindgren.
Mathew Ward and Frantisek Formanek engaged in a heated exchange during a prolonged shift in the latter stages of the first period. However, the tension escalated when Formanek crosschecked Ward in the face, leading to a major penalty and a game misconduct💩. In response, Ward was also sent to the penalty box for high sticking. In the ensuing four-on-four play, Ben King earned a double minor💩 for his own high sticking infraction. Despite the chaos, King managed to fire the puck towards the net, triggering yet another massive altercation on the ice. Once the dust had settled, the Broncos emerged with a four-on-three power play advantage.
It would of looked nice if this ended in a goal, but it didn’t. Singer almost scored on a breakaway out of the penalty box. The fat lady should of just starting singing hard when on the Power play Broncos scored again and made it 2-1 when former Kamloops Blazer 20 year old Drew Englot from Matthew Ward and Josh Davies with 44 seconds remaining in the first period.
Broncos Matthew Ward scored his 25th of the season on the empty net with 42 seconds remaining. Assist on the goal to Caleb Wyrostok.
Other Notes
Rebels next game is Friday March 24th in Lethbridge against the Hurricanes. Their final game of the season is Saturday March 25th in Red Deer against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
Attendance in Red Deer was 4431
Broncos outshot the Rebels 37-32. Boston Bruins draft pick and Winkler, MB native Reid Dyck made 31 saves for the win.
Three Stars were 1) Reid Dyck 2) Jayden Grubbe 3) Matthew Ward
Playoffs start March 31st as of now it very strongly could be Medicine Hat. A first round I wouldn’t mind seeing. Minus the fact the Tigers are looking really good lately.
Owen Pickering was the first Bronco chosen in the first round since 2015. He is also only the second defenceman selected from the Broncos in the first round and 7th Bronco ever to be chosen in the first round of the NHL draft.
