The Red Deer Rebels’ firepower fizzled out on the road as they succumbed to a 5-1 thrashing by the Edmonton Oil Kings. The Rebels faced their third consecutive defeat, dipping their early season tally to a modest 4-3-1 in the WHL’s 2024-25 campaign
Florida Panthers 2023 2nd rounder Gracyn Sawchyn scored for the Oil Kings at 4:02 of the first period with the assists on the goal going to his younger brother Lukas Sawchyn who played last season in the USHL with the Chicago Steel and West Kelowna native Ethan MacKenzie. Today was the Sawchyn brothers first home game together in Edmonton.
The Oil Kings made it a 2-0 game at 12:17 of the first period when captain Gavin Hodnett got his third marker of the season with Ethan MacKenzie getting his second helper of the period on that one.
Nipawin, Saskatchewan native Roan Woodward scored on the Power Play at 19:36 of the first period to make it a 3-0 game for the Oil Kings. The assist on the goal went to Gracyn Sawchyn.
Shots on goal in the first period were 12-8 for the Oil Kings.
Edmonton native Cole Miller scored his first goal of the season at 4:39 of the second period to make it a 4-0 Oil Kings game. The assist on the goal went to Vancouver Canucks 2024 6th round pick Parker Alcos.
Landon Hanson made it a 5-0 game at at 13:05 of the second period with the assist going to Blake Fiddler.
Shots on goal in the second period were 11-8 for the Oil Kings
Hunter Mayo scored his third goal of the season to finally get the Rebels on the board at 1:45 of the third period. The assists on the goal went to Derek Thurston and Carson Birnie.
Shots on goal in the third period were 13-7 for the Rebels. The Oil Kings just outshot the Rebels in the game 30-29.
Walheim, Saskatchewan native Alex Worthington made 28 stops on the 29 shots that he faced for the Oil Kings. For the Rebels Chase Wutzke made 9 saves on the 12 shots that he faced and then after the first period was replaced by Rhett Stoesser who stopped 16 of the 18 shots that he faced.
