The Red Deer Rebels had this one right there for the taking, but in the end, it slipped away in heartbreaking fashion. An early goal just 53 seconds into the game proved to be the difference, as the Edmonton Oil Kings held on for a tight 2-0 victory over the Rebels on Friday night at the Marchant Crane Centrium. Despite a strong effort from Red Deer—they outshot Edmonton 34-23 and created plenty of chances—the puck just wouldn’t go in. Several shots rang off the posts, and they failed to convert on any of their seven power-play opportunities, while the Oil Kings went 0-for-2 with the man advantage. Parker Snell stood tall in net for Edmonton, turning away everything that came his way. The loss means the Rebels stay one point behind Moose Jaw for eighth in the WHL Eastern Conference, though they still hold two games in hand. Red Deer drops to 21-32-2-2 on the season, while Edmonton improves to 37-16-3-2 and completes a perfect 7-0-1-0 record against the Rebels this year. It was also a bit of an emotional night with former Rebel Jaxon Fuder making his return to Red Deer after being traded to the Oil Kings back on December 27. Now the Rebels turn their attention to hosting Swift Current tomorrow night, hoping to get back on track.
