The Blackfalds Bulldogs traded 2006-born goaltender Olivér Király to the Vernon Vipers on October 16, 2026, in exchange for a player development fee and nothing else. The Budapest, Hungary native had been a standout in his first BCHL season with the Bulldogs in 2025-26, appearing in 26 regular-season games with a 14-win record, four shutouts, a 2.30 goals-against average, and a .906 save percentage while earning all-star recognition and a finalist nod for the league’s top goaltender award. He also added two more shutouts in six playoff appearances. Known for his athleticism, active style, and puck-handling ability, Király saw limited action early in the 2026-27 campaign. Remarkably, his full season plus the early months of this year already marked the longest tenure any goaltender has ever had with the franchise—and he was on track to become the first tender in Bulldogs history to complete two full seasons with the club.

For the Vipers, who currently own one of the better records in the BCHL, the acquisition shores up their crease after 2007-born Kason Kobelka left for the Prince George Cougars of the WHL. Head coach and general manager Matt Cooke pointed to Király’s proven track record and the stability he should bring alongside Samuel DiBlasi. From a Blackfalds perspective, though, the deal is a head-scratcher. Moving an established, high-level goalie who has already delivered at a high level—to a strong conference rival, no less—for zero player return feels mind-boggling. It is not as though the organization is short on resources. The move does free up more opportunity for the remaining goaltenders on the roster, including Nico Armellin and Ivan Kastelan, but it also ends a stretch of rare continuity in the crease. Either way, got to wish Király the best in Vernon. He was a pleasure to have in Blackfalds and gave the team exactly the kind of reliable, high-end goaltending any junior club hopes for.
