The Red Deer Rebels kicked off their preseason schedule Friday night, facing the Calgary Hitmen at Seven Chiefs Sportsplex.The Rebels iced a roster heavy with rookies and new faces, while the Hitmen, already in their second preseason outing, dominated with a 5-0 victory.Red Deer’s Matthew Kondro (’07, Edmonton, AB) started in goal and shone early, making several key saves to keep Calgary scoreless for much of the first period.The Hitmen broke through late in the first when Kale McCann (’09, Cochrane, AB) fired a shot over Kondro’s glove, taking a 1-0 lead. Despite being outshot 24-7, Kondro’s strong play limited the damage in the opening frame.Calgary surged ahead in the second period with two quick goals, just 16 seconds apart, from Keaton Jundt (’08, West Fargo, ND) and Landon Amrhein (’08, Celina, TX), making it 3-0. Andrei Molgachev (’08, Magnitogorsk, RUS) added a power-play goal late in the period, extending the lead to 4-0.In the third, Dallas Stars prospect Brandon Gorzynski (’07, Scottsdale, AZ) sealed the 5-0 final with an early goal.
