In Friday’s game, the Brandon Wheat Kings crushed the Red Deer Rebels with a 4-1 victory, even though the Rebels almost doubled them in shots. Brett Hyland scored two goals, and Carson Bjarnason made some killer saves. Bjarnason’s return to the line up from injury he suffered a few weeks back was a game-changer, helping the Wheat Kings secure the win. This is the first time the Rebels have lost in regulation since December 27th.
Shots on goal in the first period were 15-8 for the Rebels
20 year old veteran Brett Hyland made it a 1-0 game at 2:15 of the second period on the Power Play with the assist going to 19 year old Russian Andrei Maliavin.– Hyland took a feed from Andrei Maliavin and unleashed a howitzer of a one-timer to the top corner for his 26th, which tied a career high.
Brett Hyland got his second goal of the game and 27th of the season on the Power Play at 4:42 of the second period. Assists on the goal to Roger McQueen and Rylen Roersma.– Hyland then set a new career high with his 27th after McQueen broke into the zone on another power play and set him up in the slot.
Matteo Fabrizi got the Rebels on the board at 11:09 of the middle period with the assists on the goal to Jhett Larson and Frantisek Formanek.– Matteo Fabrizi gave the Rebels some hope, with his second goal of the season on a blast from the point at 11:09.
Saskatoon native Roger McQueen scored his 20th goal of the season to make it a 3-1 Wheat Kings game at 12:21 of the second period. The assists on the goal went to Nicholas Johnson and Brett Hyland.– Roger McQueen notched his 20th of the year at 12:21 and that proved to be to much for Red Deer to overcome.
Shots in the second period were 11-7 for the Wheat Kings
Matteo Michels got his 11th goal of the season on the empty net to make it a 4-1 game unassisted with 1:23 left in the game.– The Wheat Kings weathered the storm, and finally opportunity struck when, off a turnover, Michels deposited it into the empty Red Deer net.
Shots in the third period were an overpowering18-2 for the Rebels, but it just wasn’t enough. The Rebels almost doubled the Wheat Kings in shots outshooting them 40-21 in the game.
Carson Bjarnason made 39 saves on the 40 shots that he faced for the win for the Wheat Kings. Chase Wutzke made 17 saves on the 20 shots that he faced for the Rebels.
