The Blackfalds Bulldogs’ promising 2025/26 season came to a disappointing end on April 12, as they fell 5-3 to the Sherwood Park Crusaders in Game 6 of their BCHL first-round playoff series, dropping the best-of-seven matchup 4-2. Despite dominating the regular-season head-to-head with a 5-1-1 record, the second-seeded Bulldogs couldn’t overcome the third-seeded Crusaders, who now advance to face the Brooks Bandits in round two. In the finale, captain Joey Melo and Matthew Croxall each tallied a goal and an assist, Nikita Meshcheryakov added a goal, and defenceman Luke Dahlen chipped in with two helpers, but goaltender Oliver Kiraly faced a tough night, allowing four goals on just 20 shots. Head coach Ryan Tobler expressed pride in his group’s effort, noting, “I thought we’d be playing more hockey, but unfortunately, that’s how this game goes.”It was nonetheless a successful campaign overall for Blackfalds, who led the BCHL with a stellar +84 goal differential, surrendered the second-fewest goals (135), and ranked fifth in scoring (219). The team showed strong chemistry and commitment from day one, battling neck-and-neck with the Bandits for the Interior East title before a late surge by Brooks edged them out. A major blow came early when one of the starting goalies, Carson Mertz went down, though Kiraly stepped up admirably. The loss marked the end of the road for several key contributors, including Braydan Smith, Alex Bosland, Thomas Neu, Nikita Ivashchenko, Nikolaj Rupi, Noah Mertz, Nikita Meshcheryakov, and captain Joey Melo—an emotional farewell for a leadership core that Tobler praised as outstanding teammates, role models, and community ambassadors. On a brighter note, star forward Ivashchenko earned a spot as a finalist for the Vern Dye Memorial Trophy as league MVP after tying for third in goals (31 in 53 games), finishing fourth in points (69), and dominating on the power play. With the core moving on, the Bulldogs are already shifting focus to the offseason and building toward their ultimate goal of winning it all next year.
