Tuesday night at the Art Hauser Centre the Red Deer Rebels pulled off a gutsy 4-3 comeback win over the top-seeded Prince Albert Raiders, storming back in the third with three straight unanswered goals—including two just 13 seconds apart—to steal the game after trailing most of the night. The Raiders had the lead after two periods and looked in control, but things fell apart in the final eight minutes: Beckett Hamilton cut it to 3-2 with 7:16 left, Matej Mikes tied it on the power play at 2:49, and right off the next faceoff Cameron Kuzma ripped one from distance that hit the post and beat goalie Bass for the winner. Matthew Kondro was a beast in net, turning aside 45 shots to keep Red Deer alive. The victory bumped the Rebels to 23-32-2-2 and 50 points, holding them a single point ahead of the Moose Jaw Warriors—who upset the Calgary Hitmen 4-2 the same night—while closing the gap on seventh-place Regina Pats (who lost to Medicine Hat) to just three points with nine games to go. It was only the second time all season Red Deer won after trailing after 40 minutes, and just the second time Prince Albert dropped one when leading after two. Aleksey Chichkin picked up another goal and assist in back-to-back games, Cole Temple returned after missing 18 games with a lower-body injury, and forward Tyson Yaremko left early with an apparent injury and didn’t return. Fans watching couldn’t help thinking this felt like a sneak preview of a possible first-round playoff matchup.
